Description
Evangelicalism today is recognized to be in deep crisis. This course examines the peculiar character of evangelical theology that gives rise to its present-day crisis, and suggests ways to overcome the crisis by proposing a holistic evangelical spirituality. The course has three components. The historical component will consider the various renewal movements in history that have given rise to what is now called evangelicalism. This will provide the backdrop for the critical component which examines the basic characteristics of an evangelical theology and spirituality and highlights its strengths and weaknesses. The theological component will suggest ways of developing a more holistic evangelical spirituality by reexamining the hitherto underdeveloped evangelical ecclesiology and by incorporating elements from other Christian traditions, especially the sacramental and liturgical. Lectures include:
- Defining Evangelcalism
- High and Late Medieval Spirituality
- Brethren of Common Life
- Immediate Precursors of Modern Evangelicalism
- The Problems of Modern Evangelical Spirituality
- The Need to Recover Evangelical Spirituality
- Proposals for a Holistic Spirituality
- A Trinitarian Spirituality
- Worship and Ecclesial Formation
- Retrieving the Great Tradition
- Eschatology
