Description
In the 20th century the evangelical contribution to what might be called "the life of the mind" has been far less dramatic than the size of the evangelical movement might suggest. Contributions to the fine arts, formal academic thought in the social sciences, psychology, history and philosophy of science, history and critical theory, or the theory and practice of mass media have been minimal. This course explores the historical circumstances that contributed to this situation, and examines resources that might help evangelical Protestants to love the Lord more effectively with the mind, as well as with the heart and soul. Lectures include:
- Introduction (Noll)
- The Problem of Christian Thinking (Noll)
- The North American Problem: Historical (Noll)
- The Scandal of the Canadian Evangelical Mind (Stackhouse)
- Why Johnny Can't Produce Evangelical Scholarship (Stackhouse)
- Why We Should Take Intellectual Life Seriously (Noll)
- Theological Resources for Christian Living (Noll)
- A New Framework for Evangelical Thought (Stackhouse)
- Concluding Remarks
