Many powerful writers in the 19th century came to long and search for a personal God who could heal their wounds, bring meaning to their lives, and break their bondage to death. These hungry, visionary poets sought the face of a "gracious, condescending God" which is what many of the greatest theologians of the 20th century would proclaim in calling for a vigorous renewal of trinitarian theology and the doctrine of Christ.
