Description

This lecture explores the biblical trajectory of what Ched Myers and others have called "Sabbath economics", drawing on biblical narratives such as the manna episode and the feeding of the 5,000, as well as texts that elucidate the various kinds of sabbaths, including jubilee. This biblical vision constitutes a strong critique of capitalism with its ideology of individual self-interest and pursuit of profit, and ties in with current popular movements (e.g., the Occupy Movement) that emphasize direct participatory democracy and collective, consensus decision making.
