This course attempts a panoramic view of Christian history from the apostolic age to (almost) the present, emphasizing the cross-cultural diffusion of the faith and consequent demographic and cultural changes within the Christian community. Much of the course will explore the fairly recent past, in which the shape of world Christianity has changed more dramatically and more rapidly than at any period since the very first centuries of church history. While the long-time Christian heartlands of Europe and North America have experienced unprecedented secularization, the regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America have developed more vibrant Christian communities than now exist in 'the Christian West.' In the meantime, questions of how Christians should live with integrity in their own cultures have multiplied throughout the world with incredible diversity. This class interprets these developments by examining geo-political, demographic, cultural, theological, and ecclesiastical factors. It aims to understand issues of gospel and culture historically and to develop cultural sensitivity in the reading of history.
