Description
Explore women's lives and religious beliefs in the early centuries of the church. Encounter both the concept and the lived reality of being female in Greco-Roman, Jewish and early Christian cultures by studying the biblical text, literary sources and archaeological evidence. Examine New Testament women's participation in and contributions to the Christian story in the first century, as well as Christian women's participation in the intellectual, liturgical, ascetic and monastic arenas of the emerging orthodox church. Throughout the course, gain a deeper contextual understanding of early Christian women by examining parallel portraits of women's lives in Judaism and the religions of the Greco-Roman world. Attention will be given to writings about and by women as well as the theological issues of gender and questions of women's participation in Christian leadership today.
