Description

Spiritual Interpretation and the Future of Scripture Translation - David Jeffrey

Reflection on the KJV Bible translation this year has raised questions about its endurance in the face of literally dozens of contemporary options in English. Even a cursory review of these options reveals a general tendency to level out the spiritual sense of many key biblical terms, to prefer a material to spiritual signification to a degree that makes spiritual interpretation of the text more difficult if not altogether artificial. Might it be possible for Catholic and evangelical scholars to propose a new, common Bible in English in which the spiritually rich language of the KJV and Douai translations, as of their Hebrew, Greek and Latin - - exemplars are recaptured for lectio divina and worship?

New Testament Typology and New Testament Exegesis - Matthew Levering

Dr. Levering will examine St. Paul's use of typological exegesis and how we might use it today through consideration of Richard B. Hays's contributions to the interpretation of 1 Corinthians 9-10 as it helps us understand better the uses, limits, and rationale of typological exegesis, both in Scripture and today. The ecumenical and theological background to this essay is the fact that the practice of typological exegesis is one of the things that led Catholic and Orthodox Christians to believe in Mary's bodily Assumption, although this doctrine will not be discussed specifically.

Spiritual Interpretation in the Letter to the Hebrews - Mary Healy

The Letter to the Hebrews is unique in the New Testament in the theological depth and precision with which it describes the relation between the old and new covenants. This talk will explore how Hebrews interprets the Old Testament spiritually, both in its theoretical understanding and in its reading of specific texts. The talk will conclude by suggesting some implications for biblical interpretation in the Church today.
These papers are also available as part of the complete set of presentations from the conference, Heaven on Earth: The Future of Spiritual Interpretation.
