"Amazing love! How can it be, that Thou my God shoulds’t die for me?” We rightly sing these words written by Charles Wesley with wonder and deep emotion. But is the doctrine of the atonement coherent? Can it stand the critiques of our age? The course Total Atonement will in part be a defence of the atonement but mostly it will offer a constructive consideration of this doctrine which is so crucial to Christian faith and devotion. We will re-imagine the “apprehended mystery” of the atonement in light of the triune nature of God and the person and work of the incarnate Christ. We will propose participation as a theory or framework of atonement that holds all the models within it. This involves God’s participation in humanity in order that humans might participate in God. This invites a total approach to the mystery of the atonement, that is, one that involves the whole Trinity, the whole person and history of Christ, and all the biblical motifs and theological models of atonement–– including penal substitution (properly nuanced to overcome its caricatures). We will also examine the scope of the atonement in light of these Trinitarian, incarnational realities. It is our hope that this course will enhance your appreciation of the depth and width of the atonement, embolden your proclamation of the cross, and renew your worship and devotion to the One who lived and died and rose again for you.
