Description

More cynicism and confusion surrounds the issue of sanctification (or formation or discipleship) than any other Christian teaching. Cynicism arises often in the aftermath of triumphalistic teaching, on the one hand, which has promised too much. On the other hand, an over-emphasis on justification by faith alone in some Protestant settings, has led to low expectations of transformation, and even antinomianism. Confusion is prevalent also surrounding questions like: How does divine agency and human action co-exist? How does having a missional orientation fit into Christian formation? How does being and doing relate? Does the cultivation of virtue guarantee faithful ethical action? Does the reality of union with Christ (participation) make spiritual practices superfluous?
This letter to the Philippians promises the possibility of joyful growth in Christ even in adversity. We will in this course seek to discover a theology of praxis of transformation that is gospel motivated and ennervated, that is person-centred, that involves the dynamics of imitation of Christ in participation with Christ, and that portrays a God-at-work as we-are-at-work compatibilism. We will explore spiritual practices that enable the participation of the people of God in Christ by the Spirit. Knowing the reality of the gospel in its transformational fullness is not enough, however. True disciples are called to make disciples. This course will therefore have an orientation towards proclamation of what is learned. In each lecture exposition of a section of Philippians will serve both to elucidate the transformation Paul expresses, and to illustrate principles of expository teaching/preaching. Lectures include:

    n
  • Philippians 1:1-2 - Epistolary Prescript: Essential Foundations of Joyful Formation/Philosophy/Theology of Expository Preaching/Teaching

Due to some technical difficulties, there is some excess noise at times in a few of the lectures. The price of this title has been adjusted accordingly. n
