Description
What is the shape of spirituality in the Christian tradition? How have believers in the church throughout its history responded to the call to prayer, meditation, the study of Scripture, spiritual conflict and the reality of suffering and evil in the world? In this course we will read classic texts by both men and women - from patristic, medieval, reformation and modern periods - that deal with these central questions of Christian spirituality. We will learn to read devotionally, seeking to foster a deeper life of prayer from what we have read together. Lectures include:
- Preliminary Considerations: Introduction to Devotional Reading
- Introduction to Chrysostom's On the Priesthood
- Bernard of Clairvaux: "The Steps of Humility and Pride"
- Julian of Norwich: Showings (2 Lectures)
- John Owen: Triumph Over Temptation
- Mother Teresa: Total Surrender and Video Remarks
