Description

This series has a two-fold aim: historical and theological. Its historical aim is to give factual knowledge of John Calvin's circumstances, thoughts and legacy to his successors, and of the ways in which this legacy was developed in Reformed scholasticism, Puritanism, the revivalist and missionary tradition, American orthodoxy, the Dutch resurgence and twentieth-century neo-orthodoxy. Its theological aim is to show what it is like to look at the church, the world, oneself and above all God, through Calvinistic spectacles, so that each listener may be able to judge the viability or otherwise of this way of thinking. Reactions and deviations (e.g., Arminianism; Amyraldism and Baxterianism; Hyper-Calvinism; Sandemanianism; Universalism) are noticed, though not studied in great detail.
