Description

Galatians is a letter waiting to explode again with its original scandalous force. After placing Paul's arguments in their historical context, John Barclay traces the ways in which Paul reconfigures Scripture and history around Christ crucified, and applies the subversive power of grace both to his own and to his converts' cultural loyalties. Working through the text in sequence, this series moves beyond the current paradigms in interpretation, while maintaining a respectful dialogue both with Luther and with contemporary readings from the 'new perspective on Paul.' The aim is to explore how Galatians shapes the social practices and expectations of believers in community, and to draw out the contemporary significance of Paul's theology of justification, grace, the Spirit, and mutually constructive love - all re-defined by the self-giving of Christ. The course does not presume knowledge of New Testament Greek. Lectures include:

  • The History Behind the Letter: The Galatian Crisis
  • Paul and the Good News: Galatians 1:1-2:10
  • Trends in the History of Interpretation
  • The Antioch Dispute and Its Implications: Galatians 2:11-21
  • Galatians 3-4: How the Christ-Event Reconfigures History and Identity
  • Galatians 5-6: Communities That Express the Gift
  • The Closing Summary and the Contemporary Significance
