Description
An emphasis on leadership in the church has caused a host of problems, with prominent leaders leaving a path of destruction in their wake. However, there is a place for leadership if it is understood correctly. Counter-intuitively, this is not primarily understood by looking at the threefold pattern of bishop, presbyter and deacon. Nor is understanding the church as the place where "the Gospel is rightly taught and the Sacraments are rightly administered" a reliable method of determining what a church leader should do.
In this lecture, Dr. Rowell argues that the key to understanding church leadership is understanding the purpose of the church. Also, it is important to take into account the role of the apostle in the New Testament. Dr. Rowell's argument is primarily biblical and theological but also draws upon leadership literature for terminology. Dr. Rowell's talk reflects on his training at Regent College, including the emphasis on equipping the laity, Eugene Peterson's understanding of pastoring, and Gordon Fee's reflections on New Testament church leadership.
