George Ellis is a scientist and has authored over 200 scientific papers and 5 books in the fields of cosmology and general relativity. He has served as the president of the International Society of General Relativity and Gravitation and of the Royal Society of South Africa. He is the winner of several prestigious awards, including the Herschel Medal in Astronomy and the Star of South Africa Medal for his work on education and social development in South African academic institutions.
