Description

"The scandal of the incarnation later becomes the scandal of Jesus' life... the scandal of his death... the scandal of the resurrection... Surely God is not to be found entangled in all this scandal! And Matthew says, with this harmless-looking genealogy, 'Well actually, you know, YES.'"

With a Gospel full of exciting stories, powerful teaching, and colourful characters, how does Matthew try to grab our attention at the beginning of his writing? With a list of names. A long list of difficult names. Why?

In this sermon on Matthew 1.1-17, Iain Provan unpacks the importance of this "family tree," through which Matthew roots his story in the larger, older story of God's work throughout Israel's history.
