Valentine Cunningham is Fellow and Senior Tutor in English Literature at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, University Professor of English at Oxford, and Visiting Professor at the University of Konstanz in Germany. He reviews widely for British and American journals and newspapers including The Observer, and broadcasts regularly for the BBC. He was a judge for the Booker Prize in 1992 and was formerly Regional Chair of the judges for the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Eurasia region.) He has written a number of books including Everywhere Spoken Against: Dissent in the Victorian Novel, British Writers of the Thirties, In The Reading Goal: Postmodernity, Texts, and History and Reading After Theory. Description
This course will be looking at T.S. Eliot's development from sceptical modernist poet-critic to the most important Christian poet of the twentieth century - with the help of some of his influential prose writings. Eliot's main poems 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock', 'The Waste Land', 'Ash Wednesday' and Four Quartets will be read in conjunction with essays found in Selected Essays of TS Eliot (ed. Frank Kermode), and Eliot's Notes Towards the Definition of Culture.
